Crude Oil, Explained

Crude oil, like natural gas, is a hydrocarbon that serves as a powerful source of energy, usually extracted from underneath bodies of water. It comes in three weight classes: Light Crude, Medium Crude and Heavy Crude. This determination is based on a measure called API gravity, which is how heavy petroleum liquid is relative to water. The more API gravity degrees an oil is, the lighter it is. Most crude oil is lighter than water, although some heavy crudes could conceivably be heavier.

There are also five main types of crude oil. There is Sour Crude, which contains carbon dioxide and higher hydrogen sulfide levels, and is typically made into diesel fuel. There is Light Crude, which has a low wax content, Sweet Crude, which has less than .5 percent sulfur and very small amounts of hydrogen sulfide or carbon dioxide, which makes it popular for gasoline processing, Texas Sweet Light Crude, which is a more expensive oil that is used to determine oil pricing, and Brent Crude, which comes from the North Sea and is ideal for gasoline production.
